PELEG AND THE DIVIDED EARTH

Genesis chapter 10 briefly mentions a man named Peleg and says the earth was divided in his days. The Bible doesn’t tell us much about Peleg, but we can uncover more than we see at first glance by looking at the scriptures surrounding the introduction of this man. For one, we know that he lived after the great worldwide flood because he was a descendant of Shem, one of Noah’s sons. He was actually Shem’s great, great, grandson.

Genesis 10:22
22
The children of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram….
24 Arphaxad had Salah;
and Salah had Eber.
25 Eber had two sons: the name of one was Peleg; because the earth was divided in his days, and his brother’s name was Joktan.

This is the genealogy of Noah’s descendants after the flood. The genealogy record in 1 Chronicles 1:19 says the same thing about Peleg that Genesis does; “the Earth was divided in his days.” What does that mean?

Well, some Christians believe this verse may confirm the evolutionary theory about Pangaea, where a great land mass or supercontinent broke up and formed the continents we now have. The Bible does say that God made one great land mass when he separated the water from the dry land on the third day of creation week, but the waters of the global flood drastically changed the surface of the earth while it rained for forty days, and during the time it covered the earth, and as the water receded.

Peleg was born almost 200 years after the flood. As I always say, we need to look to the Bible to develop our beliefs, not to the secular world that rejects God and teaches evolution. Let’s look at verses 1 and 5 of Genesis chapter 10.

Genesis 10:1
1
These are the descendants of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; sons were born to them after the flood.

Genesis 10:5
5
By these men, the lands of the Gentiles were divided on the earth by languages, families, and nations.

How does that verse say the earth was divided?
By men. Mere humans. Specifically, the descendants of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah (Genesis 10:1).

What kind of division was it?
The land (Earth) was divided by languages, families, and nations.

One of Noah’s great-grandsons was Nimrod. Genesis 10:10 says the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and three other cities. Genesis 11:1-9 tells us about the Tower of Babel and says everyone on earth spoke the same language at that time; there was only one. Then the sons of men started building the tower to reach high into the sky to make a name for themselves, and to be honored by the people (Genesis 11:1-9).

God saw what they were doing, so he came down and confused their languages so they couldn’t continue building the tower, and he scattered them across the Earth (Genesis 11:5-9). Look at these next verses closely.

Genesis 10:31-32
31
These were the sons of Shem, by their families, and their languages, in their lands, and their nations.
32 These were the descendants of the sons of Noah, in their generations, in their nations: and by them, the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

Genesis 10:5
5
By these men, the lands of the Gentiles were divided on the earth by languages, families, and nations.

So clearly, the earth was divided in Peleg’s day by Families, Languages, and Nations. This is a good example of how to study the Bible. Search the scriptures, and compare scriptures to understand all the Bible says about any subject. God bless you in your study of his holy word.

THE ALIENS WILL SOON RETURN

I’ve always been interested in space. I remember learning about the planets, the stars, and the galaxies in school. It was so interesting to know there was so much out there beyond our little world. Then I heard about UFOs, and aliens. That was interesting, too. A little scary, but interesting. I wondered many times if there were aliens on other planets and if I would ever meet any.
When I was eight years old, I had a frightening dream. My sister and I were abducted by aliens. That dream returned, often, over, and over again for more than thirty years. During that time, I tried to make some kind of sense of it. Had we really been abducted by aliens? Were these repressed memories manifesting themselves in my dreams? What I finally found out was shocking. I’ll put a link to the full story at the end of this post.*
I’m still interested in aliens, space, and science. I sometimes watch TV shows about aliens and UFOs. There used to be TV shows where people who believed they had been abducted by aliens could share their stories. Those were very interesting and I would watch them every chance I got. Those stories were similar to mine and that kept me watching, hoping to get some answers.
There are still shows about UFO sightings. I watch some of those when I can. One of the things that confused me for years was that so many of these stories about UFO sightings, and alien abductions contradicted others. Sure, some of them were proven to be fake, so that explained a few things, but many others have never been proven to be true or false.
I've been a Christian now for many years. In reading the Bible, and communicating with God through prayer, many things have become clear to me. I gained a new perspective on things concerning space, aliens, and science. I realized that God is what’s missing from the equation many times when people try to understand things in this world, and in space.
I find it interesting that people believe in aliens but refuse to believe in God. Some even believe that aliens came here in the distant past, and somehow created humans. I believe it, too. That was God. It wasn’t little green or gray men from another planet. It was God. From heaven. Many ancient tales talk about beings from the stars coming and interacting with humans. Most legends come from something that actually happened like the legends of dragons. They were real. We call them dinosaurs today. In almost every culture, there’s a story about the biblical flood. The details differ from tale to tale but they all come from something that actually happened.
The beings from the stars are actually angels, and not all of them are good. Some of them are evil. Most people know the story of Satan and his angels who were kicked out of heaven. The Bible tells us that they and the holy angels have been interacting with mankind since God created the world.
I do believe there are other people on other planets outside our solar system. There is probably at least one inhabited planet in each of the trillions of galaxies spread throughout the universe. They are so far apart and so far from us, though, I doubt they could ever come here. Why would God allow them to come to our sin-cursed world anyway?
What about all those UFO sightings, then? Many of them have been well explained, but some are still a mystery. I won’t say it’s nothing or try to explain it all away because too many people have seen these things. The Bible says Satan is very smart, and he hates God and us. He has plans to destroy us, and he’ll use anything he possibly can to do that. He uses dinosaur bones to make people believe in evolution. That destroys people’s faith in God, and his holy word because evolution puts death before sin when the Bible clearly says death came into the world because of Adam’s sin. Maybe Satan is using UFOs, and aliens to distort some other truth about God. I don’t know.
What I do know is this; If we understand that God created everything, and we study the Bible, many mysteries are cleared up. I know we’ll never understand everything, but when we put God back into the equation, many things make more sense.
God made the world. He created mankind on the earth, and God is in charge. Many refuse to acknowledge that fact because they don’t want to do what he says. They don’t want to be accountable to him, so they look for any other answer except God. Don’t be one of those people. Give God the credit for what he has done. Give him the praise and glory he deserves. Get to know him, and his Son, Jesus, through prayer and Bible study. Give your life, and your whole self to him. Serve him, help others to know him, and be prepared for his soon return. When the trumpet sounds, and he appears in the sky, you’ll be glad you did.

LEARNING FROM A GREMLIN

I remember buying what I think was my fourth car. It was a Gremlin. It was yellow with black trim. It was different and unique in shape from most cars on the road at the time, so I guess that’s what attracted me to it. I found out quickly that the fuel gauge was very accurate. Thankfully, I was almost home when it hit E and stopped in the middle of the road. I had to push it the rest of the way. That’s the car I was driving when I almost went off the embankment because a girl fell over on the stirring wheel. If you missed that story, you can read all about it in the post called, *3 Girls, 3 Guys, And A Gremlin.
I loved that car but it was used and I didn’t have it long. I was driving down a two-lane highway one day and the car in front of me was going a bit slower than I wanted to go, so I decided to go around it. I had seen people drop their gear shifter on automatic cars down a gear in order to get up more speed to pass another car. They called it passing gear. Well, I needed some more speed so that’s what I did. I wish I hadn’t, though, because when I did, the car down-shifted hard and started vibrating really bad. I heard a terrible noise like pieces of the motor falling off onto the road. I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw those pieces sliding all over the highway behind me.
What a mess. What a disappointment. I only had the thing for a few weeks. I stopped as quickly as I could on a little gravel road. To my surprise, the car was still running so I drove just a bit further to the gas station and went in to call my uncle. He came and looked at it and confirmed that the car had slung a rod. I told him it was still running when I made it to the store, so he told me to start it up and see if it would still run. I did, and it did, so he followed me as I drove it to his house. That was a sad day. I miss that car sometimes and on the rare occasion when I see a yellow Gremlin, I’m reminded of those thrilling days.
I have had so many used cars over the years that I doubt I could remember them all. I do remember at least ten cars and a truck from the time I was sixteen until I was twenty-three, though. Some were used, some were more used than others, and some were really used. Some had been well maintained, but some had not. The ones that had been taken care of were in better shape, of course, and they lasted longer. The ones that had been neglected were in bad shape and didn’t last long at all. I’m sure all of them would have lasted longer if I had taken better care of them myself, but I didn’t. I was a young man with a heavy foot and I drove too fast and was hard on my cars. I didn’t have the oil changed regularly and I didn’t really check it regularly. In short, I neglected them.
I did the same thing with my body for years. I ate what I wanted. I drank what I wanted. I drank alcohol and used drugs. I partied and I stayed out all night. I took drugs to stay awake. I took drugs to help me sleep. I gained weight, then starved myself to lose it. I took laxatives and weight loss drugs. Even after I stopped drinking and doing drugs, I spent lots of late nights playing video games, reading comic books, and organizing baseball cards. All that abuse to my body, plus the wear and tear from several strenuous jobs and two car wrecks have taken a toll on me. Now, my body is worn out and I’m in constant pain.
I’m thankful to God for helping me to give up those bad habits, but the damage is done. What bothers me the most is that a lot of it could have been avoided. If I had been more concerned about my health back then, I would still have a lot more good years left in me. The Bible says our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives inside of us (1 Corinthians 6:19). We need to take care of his temple. Our bodies are like machines. Just like those machines, if our bodies don’t have regular maintenance they don’t last near as long as they will if we take good care of them.
Our bodies can’t live without WATER so that would be a good place to start. We need to drink plenty of water. REST is very important as well, so we need to try to get eight hours of sleep each night. We need to get plenty of fresh AIR, so walking outside and doing other kinds of EXERCISE outdoors is a great way to kill two birds with one stone.
Another very important thing we need is SUNSHINE. Not all, but many living things need sunshine to be healthy. Of course, too much sunlight can be harmful. We need it in moderate amounts. Too much of anything can be bad for you, so we need to practice MODERATION in every area of our lives and we need to avoid putting things into our bodies that will harm them. We need to develop good eating habits and eat only foods that will promote good health. Good NUTRITION is imperative to maintaining both physical and mental health. Both of those are connected to our spiritual health. Usually, if we are lacking in one of these three areas, the other two will be affected. We need to round it all out by TRUSTING GOD to provide for all our needs and following his instructions in the Bible. All these things will help our bodies and minds to feel better and last longer.
Just like regular maintenance on a car can prevent costly repairs or even the death of the car, regular maintenance on our bodies can help keep us from getting sick and dying at an early age. Being healthy is very important, so we need to take care of our bodies so we can be as healthy as possible and enjoy life while we live here on this earth.
