WHAT'S WRONG WITH USING PROFANITY?

Is there anything wrong with using profanity? Some say, yes. Some say, no. How do we know who’s right? How can we find the truth? Jesus said the word of God is truth (John 17:17). So, let’s see what God has to say in his book about using profanity.
1 Thessalonians. 5:22
22. Avoid all appearance of evil.
This verse should be all we need to answer our question, but unfortunately, even though some see profanity as evil, many do not. So let’s look further.
Colossians 3:8
8. But now also, put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, evil-speaking, and FILTHY TALKING, out of your mouth.
Another verse that should be enough, but, for some, it just isn’t. So let’s look at a few more.
Ephesians 4:29
29. Let no CORRUPT TALK come out of your mouths; Only that which is good, for building up, that it may minister grace to those who hear.
2 Timothy 2:16
16. But shun PROFANE and vain talking, because they will lead to more ungodliness.
1 Corinthians 15:33
33. Do not be deceived. Evil speakings corrupt good manners.
These verses tell us to only speak good words that will bless those who hear us talking. They also tell us not to speak corrupt, worthless words because they corrupt good manners and make us ungodly, and yes, it says don’t use profanity.
In Matthew 12:34, Jesus said …. out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Matthew 12:35-37
35. A good man brings forth good things out of the good treasure of the heart, and an evil man brings forth evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart.
36. But I tell you, That every idle word that people speak, they will give an account of in the day of judgment.
37. Because you will be justified by your words, or you will be condemned by your words.
Jesus made it clear that we are accountable for every word we speak. He also says that how we talk is a reflection of the condition of our hearts. As we draw closer to God, the Holy Spirit will tell us when we say things we shouldn’t, and soon we will be able to hear him warn us before we do it. We just need to learn to listen and obey him.
In case all the verses we’ve looked at so far don’t convince you, here are a few more.
Proverbs 16:23
23. The heart of the wise guides their mouth wisely and adds doctrine to their lips.
James 1:26
26. If any of you think you are religious and don’t bridle your tongue, but you deceive your own heart, your religion is worthless.
1 Peter 3:10
10. For you who would love life and see good days, keep your tongue from speaking evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.
What about listening to others use profanity, either in person, or in movies, TV, radio, or other media?
2 Peter 2:7-8
7 [God] delivered righteous Lot, who was VEXED with the FILTHY CONVERSATION of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man living among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
Whatever we fill our minds with is what we become like. If we listen to filthy talk and profanity, we start talking filthy and using profanity, and it will have a negative effect on us, every time. Every Time. I know this to be true from experience. I’ve seen it happen to others, and I’ve experienced it in my own life as well. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says by looking at Jesus every day we will become like him.
2 Corinthians 5:17
17. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new.
There are so many excuses to be like the world, but the Bible says when we truly give ourselves to Jesus we become new creatures. Old things that we used to do are in the past, and we can go forward in newness of life. But, sometimes we hang on to some of that old life, either because we don’t know the full truth yet, or because we have practiced those things for so long that they have become part of who we are. We have to make a conscious decision to obey God and allow him to help us. He will.
James 3:13
13. Who is WISE and has knowledge among you? let them show their works through a GOOD CONVERSATION, with meekness of wisdom.
Ephesians 5:3-4
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you because it is not fitting for Saints,
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor CRUDE JOKING, which things are not proper, but rather practice giving of thanks.
1 Timothy 4:12
12. Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to those who believe, in word, IN CONVERSATION, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in PURITY.
Colossians 4:6
6. Always let your speech be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you should answer every man.
1 Timothy 6:20
20. O Timothy, keep that which is committed to you, and avoid PROFANE and vain CONVERSATIONS,…
So, is it okay to use profanity and crude humor? The answer from God’s word is clearly, NO.
This last verse should be our prayer each day.
Psalm 19:14
14. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my mind be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
God tells us in his word, the Bible, that using profanity is not acceptable. That means it is wrong. If it’s wrong, it’s a sin. We all need to strive to obey God and be the best person we can possibly be. Christians especially should follow the teachings of God’s word and be a good example to others. We all need to study the Bible more so we can better understand what kind of people God wants us to be. It’s all there in his book, the Holy Bible.
