Are you a negative person? Do you gripe and complain frequently? Do you always look for the bad in every situation? Do you always look on the dark side of things? I’ve always heard that every cloud has a silver lining, but sometimes we can’t see it because we’re not looking for it. We’re too busy focusing on the negative aspects of things.
It seems that negativity is more popular than positivity. Just look at the news media. They don’t report good things that happen near as often as bad things. We don’t seem to notice all the good things we pass by every day, but when something bad happens, people line up for miles to see what’s going on. People are more interested in bad things than good any more.
Notice when the weather is predicting a nice sunny day, it’s not much of a conversation piece, but when bad weather is predicted we have something to talk about. We focus on the negative far too often. We need to turn that around and focus more on the Positive.
Often we focus on the faults in others, instead of noticing all the good things they do. This is especially true when it comes to our children. It’s so easy to get caught up in preparing them for the future, that we don’t notice all the things they are accomplishing right now.
Negativity slows us down and actually harms us. It drags us down, and we lose sight of the positive things that are passing right in front of our eyes.
So what can we do? How can we be more positive and less negative? Here’s the key. Thankfulness. Being thankful for the good things will help us to focus less on the bad things. The Apostle Paul wrote some encouraging words in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, and in Colossians chapter 2.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
18 In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Jesus Christ concerning you.
18 In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Jesus Christ concerning you.
Colossians 2:6
6 Therefore, as you have received Jesus Christ the Lord, so walk in him:
7 Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
6 Therefore, as you have received Jesus Christ the Lord, so walk in him:
7 Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Give thanks. Be thankful. Be positive. Focus on positive things. Stop being negative. We should think about what Jesus has done for us. Where he brought us from, and what he has promised us for the future. If we focus more on him, we’ll focus less on negative things.
If you have received Jesus into your life then you have so much to be thankful for. You’ve been set free from sin. Satan no longer has any claim on your life. Jesus said, when he sets you free, you are truly free (John 8:36). If you haven’t received him into your life, you need to do so today. Right now. Don’t wait any longer. His love will give you a reason to be more positive.
